Manila is the gateway to most trips around the Philippines and it can overwhelm many travelers who have to pass through here at some point. Is Manila dangerous? What is the best area where to stay in Manila? Should I stay near the airport? What are the best hotels in Manila? These are some of the common questions we receive and, having lived in the capital for quite a few years and knowing it extensively, here we are going to answer all your doubts according to the type of trip you want to take and your needs.
Is Manila dangerous?
The answer is NO, Manila is not dangerous. Manila is a chaotic city and it may seem a bit run‑down as soon as you arrive; however, it is by no means an unsafe city.
Like any other city in the world, in Manila you will find some “rough” neighborhoods (for example, Tondo, which has a reputation for being unsafe) and you will need to use common sense and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, but we, who have lived in the city and visited it on multiple occasions (as it is usually the starting and ending point of all our trips), have never had any problems and do not consider it an unsafe city.
In any case, we recommend taking a look at Scams in the Philippines to go a little more prepared.
Which area to stay in Manila?
Manila is a huge city and it’s likely you’re a bit lost about which area to choose for sleeping. In general, we believe that the best area to stay in Manila is Makati, which is a very safe district, convenient for getting around, with lots of restaurants, the best hotels in Manila, shops and some bars to get to know a bit of Manila’s nightlife and enjoy a cold San Miguel. Within Makati, you have several different areas, our favorites being Poblacion and the one next to the Greenbelt mall. However, every traveler is different, so we’re going to tell you the pros and cons so that you can decide in which area to stay in Manila.
You’ll find everything about how to reach them safely and without being scammed in How to get from Manila Airport to the city center.
If you don’t want to complicate things much more, here are the hotels in Manila where we usually stay:
- Lub-d Makati: it has both dorms and comfortable private rooms (double and family). It is located in Poblacion, the best area. It’s close to where you take the little boat to Intramuros.
- City Garden Grand Hotel: if you want a hotel with a pool in Manila and a rooftop with views, this is your best option. Also an excellent location, with plenty of restaurants around.
- Discovery Primea: if you want something top‑tier and near Greenbelt, which is, from our experience, the most pleasant mall in Manila, with great green areas for a nice dinner. Well connected to the airport.
As you can see, all of them are in Makati, which is the area we like the most and the one we think you’ll find most pleasant.
a) Staying near Manila Airport
If you arrive late and have an early flight the next day or you simply want to rest and not move much, a good idea for sleeping in Manila is to do so near the airport. This is a safe area, more or less quiet and you’ll always find somewhere to grab a bite.
Some of the best hotels in Manila are near the airport, but you need to consider that the airport has 4 terminals. So you’ll need to choose your accommodation based on which one your flight lands at or departs from. Many accommodations near Manila Airport offer at least one free transfer to the terminal you indicate. In addition, at Terminal 3 there is a bridge that connects to a hotel area, where our favorite hotel is located: THIS.
Either way, by clicking the button you have plenty of accommodation options in Manila organized by price and proximity to the terminal that interests you:

b) Staying in Makati, Manila
Makati is Manila’s financial district, with several shopping malls, nightlife areas, clubs and high‑end restaurants, but it also has its local essence that makes it interesting. This is the part where we lived and the one we recommend for sleeping, especially if you have a day or two to discover the best of Manila.
From Makati you can visit Intramuros and the airport is (without traffic) about 20 minutes away, so it’s a convenient area to spend a morning or afternoon seeing the historic district and then come back to do some shopping, get a massage, have dinner and a drink in the trendy area while contemplating the city’s skyline. Plus, there is a huge range of guesthouses, hostels and some of the best hotels to stay in Manila without paying much, but also hotels with pools and views to enjoy a sunset soak.
Within Makati, the trendy neighborhood is Poblacion. Here you’ll find loads of lively restaurants and bars and it’s safe to walk to dinner or for a drink after a flight or a day exploring, so we’re going to recommend several of the best hotels to sleep in this area of Manila. Another good area to stay in Manila is also in Makati but closer to the Greenbelt and Glorietta malls.
Among all those here, we usually stay at THIS and, if it’s full, at THIS.

From left to right: Greenbelt Mall – Makati Church – Ayala Avenue
c) Staying in Malate, Manila
Malate is the area to stay in Manila if you’re looking for that more local vibe of bars and street food. It’s also where some backpackers choose to sleep in Manila. We like to wander around there and have a drink, but we think Makati is a more comfortable and friendlier district if it’s your first visit to the city. Even so, there are options such as Stay Malate (with double and shared rooms with or without air‑conditioning) that are fine, although we’ll warn you they’re nothing to write home about.
d) Staying in Intramuros, Manila
Intramuros is the most interesting part of Manila to visit and get a sense of the city’s historical importance. However, due to the limited dining and leisure options and the fact that after sunset it’s not usually very pleasant to walk around (though it isn’t dangerous), it’s not the area we recommend for sleeping.
Even so, if you’re very interested in staying in Intramuros, take a look at the The Bayleaf Intramuros, the best hotel in this part of Manila, which has a great rooftop terrace with views.

e) Other areas to stay in Manila
Of course, there are more areas to sleep in Manila, which is, in reality, a macro‑city made up of several cities.
So, if you’re considering visiting the north of Luzon island and going to places like Banaue or Sagada, staying near where the different bus terminals are located may suit you better, that is, around Cubao. Since the traffic jams are heavy and from the airport you’ll take more than an hour to get here, our advice is to stay close to the Araneta Coliseum, which is a pleasant area and close to the buses. For example, here we can recommend THIS or THIS.
Although it doesn’t steal our hearts, another curious part of Manila to sleep in is Fort Bonifacio or BGC. This is a district near Makati that is so modern it has become a kind of New York or Miami within the Philippines. Here you have an avenue called Bonifacio High Street full of shops and restaurants in a very American style, so it’s a safe, clean and pleasant area for shopping or dining outdoors. That’s why some of the best hotels in Manila are in BGC, such as THIS or, if you’re looking for something more moderate, THIS.
Finally, if you’re traveling for business, given the horrible traffic, the best thing is to stay close to where you have your meetings and make sure you check carefully where that is, since there are also offices in other parts of the city such as Mandaluyong, Ortigas or Alabang.

Best hostels to stay in Manila for backpackers
If you’re traveling solo, as a couple or with friends but you want to meet people, you have plenty of backpacker‑style places to stay in Manila. The area with the most of this type of accommodation is Makati, since this is also where you have more of a restaurant and bar scene. For this reason, we’re going to give you some alternatives we’ve tried.
Even so, in Hostels in Manila we give you lots of options, but here you have a small selection:
Z Hostel
Located in Poblacion, Makati’s trendy area, this is a great place if you’re looking for a backpacker vibe in Manila, as parties are often held on the rooftop. Not only that, they have PR staff who give neighborhood walks and organize other activities. They have a restaurant that’s quite reasonably priced and with tasty food, in case you don’t want to move much.
The rooms are super modern, clean and pleasant and come equipped with lockers where you can put your own padlock for extra security. They have mixed shared dorms for 4, 6 and 8 people and female‑only 6‑bed dorms. They also have double rooms with private bathrooms. Prices start at €14 and include a continental breakfast that’s pretty good.

Lub d Philippines Makati
If you’re looking for a fantastic place to stay in Manila for backpackers, stop searching—Lub‑D is your spot. This is one of the best hostels we’ve encountered on our travels. Located in the same area as the previous one, Poblacion, you’ll find shared dorms (up to 6 people, with one of them female‑only) with bunks fully equipped with outlets and lights, as well as lockers. They also have double and quadruple rooms with private bathrooms, which also makes it an ideal place for those seeking a private room. For reference, a bed in a shared room is around €14, although you can often find the odd deal from time to time.
It’s very clean, the staff are great and the common areas are perfect both for socializing and for getting some work done on your laptop. In addition, it has a rooftop/restaurant that’s super nice for a drink or dinner and meeting people. Right in front of the hotel there’s a very affordable and quick laundry, you have the Hulo boat stop very close by, which takes you to Intramuros, and several malls a few steps away.
It’s one of our favorite places to sleep in Manila, which is why we dedicated this article exclusively to it: Sleeping at Lub d Makati.
If you’re thinking of taking a backpacking trip to the Philippines, you’ll be glad to know that this is part of our selection of the Best hostels in the Philippines. And, as a bonus, if you stay 1 night, they’ll store your backpack for up to 2 months for free, which is ideal if you want to travel light around the islands.

Cheese Hostel Manila
If you’re looking for cheap accommodation in Manila with a backpacker vibe, probably the most decent choice these days is Cheese Hostel Manila. It’s a short distance (walkable) from the most interesting parts of Makati, has beds from just 7€, a very nice bar/restaurant area, and a rooftop with cool views over Manila’s tangle of skyscrapers.
You can choose to share a 4‑bed room (women only), 7‑ or 10‑bed rooms, but they also have double rooms. All have air conditioning. One thing to bear in mind is that the dorms are “old‑school”, without curtains, in case that matters to you. Other than that, it’s very clean and the staff are super friendly.

Other similar, interesting places to stay in Manila
The above are great, but we want to give you other options in case they didn’t convince you or are already full:
- Mad Monkey Manila: also in Poblacion, with beds from 11€ and a lively social vibe, including a pub crawl. You can book from this link.
- Lime Lite Manila Hostel: not the most central, but it’s cheap and clean. Take a look here.
- The City Flats Amorsolo: well located in Makati, next to Makati Med hospital and with plenty of restaurants around. They have women‑only or mixed 4‑ or 6‑bed shared rooms from 13€ per bed. You can check availability at this link.
Best budget hotels in Manila
It’s true that accommodation prices in Manila have gone up over the years and that if you want something reasonably decent it’s better to loosen the purse strings, but you can still find good hotel options in the 25-40€ range (for a double room). To make things easier, we’re going to recommend the best ones (among the many we’ve tried).
Leez Inn Makati
Located in our favorite part of Makati, Poblacion, this is a functional, clean, and modern hotel. We don’t understand why, but room prices start at 17€ and they have absolutely everything: air conditioning, a private bathroom (a bit small but manageable), a TV, and a kettle (water heater). It’s perfect if you’re traveling as a couple (there are only double rooms) and aren’t looking for much beyond a good location, since it’s surrounded by restaurants and bars.

Hop Inn Hotel Makati Avenue
Another cheap hotel in Manila that we love is Hop Inn Hotel Makati Avenue. This belongs to the Hop Inn chain, which is very similar to Ibis, with rooms that are fairly light on furnishings but relatively spacious, clean, and well air‑conditioned.
In this case, the hotel is located right on Makati Ave, one of the arteries of Makati’s district, in its Poblacion area. Specifically, it’s across from Lub d, which we mentioned earlier, so you have a laundry next door and you’re close to the Pasig River and the Hulo boat stop, which takes you to Intramuros—making it a very convenient option.
From just 29€ per night you’ll get a double room (you can request twin beds or one double) with your own bathroom, air conditioning, and more than decent service.

Lub d Philippines Makati
Although we already mentioned it in the backpacker‑friendly Manila hotels section, we don’t want you to overlook it if you’re traveling as a couple or with family because it’s one of our favorite hotels in the city—and it wouldn’t be unusual to spot us here if we happen to be in Manila at the same time. Besides shared dorms, they have double and quadruple rooms that are spacious, pleasant (Filipino crafts give them a nice touch), and with good internet. Double rooms start at 25€.
Despite being a hostel, don’t picture a “crazy” vibe. The property has 8 floors and is super quiet, so you don’t need to worry on that front. There’s a café and a restaurant in case you don’t want to complicate things.

Hotel Durban
When everything else is sky‑high and we’re looking for where to stay in Manila on the cheap, we always take a look at Hotel Durban, which is also right in the heart of Poblacion and, without frills, gives you a comfortable stay.
It’s true that the standard single and double rooms are quite small and don’t have exterior windows, but both have their own bathroom and air conditioning and prices start at just 20€, which is a real bargain for the location. Plus, in some cases the cost includes a pretty decent breakfast. If you need more space or want to be more comfortable because you’ll be staying more than a day or expect to spend a lot of time in the room, the suites and triples are better options.
Another highlight of this Manila hotel is its common areas, tastefully decorated, and the front‑desk service. What we can’t recommend as much is the restaurant, but it’s not a problem because there are plenty around.

U Hotels Makati
Located just behind Lub d—so it’s also a great area to stay—we’ve stayed at U Hotels Makati a couple of times and can recommend it. The rooms may have ceilings a bit low for our taste, but they’re modern, they have a cool vibe thanks to the graffiti, the air conditioning works wonderfully, and there’s a pretty nice café at reception.
Prices start at 31€ for the smallest doubles and, if you’re traveling with family or friends, they also have triples.

Red Planet Amorsolo Makati
Located very close to one of Makati’s arteries, Ayala Avenue, this is one of the best Manila hotel options in terms of value for money. Along with Lub d, it’s one of the ones we choose most because it’s cheap, it’s close to where we used to live (which brings back good memories), and although the rooms aren’t very big, we find it pleasant.
It belongs to another Asian hotel chain, Red Planet, and has modern, clean rooms equipped with all amenities. From here you can reach the airport faster than from the Poblacion area and you can walk to the Greenbelt malls (where there are loads of great restaurants) or follow our tips on where to eat in Manila. It’s a very safe and quiet area. Rooms start at 31€.

More budget hotels in Manila
Below are other budget places to stay in Manila that we know are great:
- Redenza Suites: the location isn’t amazing, but it’s true that it’s not far from Poblacion and with taxis (which are cheap) you’ll be able to get anywhere. They’re small studio units with a kitchenette from just 21€. Book here.
- Gomez House: in Poblacion and on the way to a large mall called Power Plant, it’s a simple but clean place with double rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom from 16€ per night. Have a look at this link.
- Solace Hotel: not right in the “core”, but well located with respect to central Makati. Modern rooms from 24€. You can book here.
Mid‑range hotels in Manila
If you can stretch your budget, you’ll get hotels in Manila with a bit more quality. That’s why we decided to create a category of places in the 40€ to 60€ range, which we consider mid‑range for accommodation in Manila.
Herald Suites Polaris
This Manila hotel is located on Polaris Street—hence the name—in the Poblacion neighborhood and a short walk from Power Plant Mall, a shopping center we really like. Of all those we’ve mentioned, it’s perhaps the one with a bit more “glamour” or personality thanks to the décor, but also to the team’s good service. Although the photos may give the impression of being very old, it doesn’t feel that way and it’s one of the most comfortable in the area.
The rooms—even the most basic—are spacious (the smallest is 27 square meters) and have a private bathroom, air conditioning, TV, and a kettle. Not only that, from just 40€ per night for a double you get breakfast included, which we think offers excellent value for money.

The Sphere Serviced Residences Managed by HII
We often find it full, but if you’re lucky enough to find availability, we suggest considering this aparthotel for your stay in Manila because it’s excellent. It’s located in what could be called the “hard core” of Makati, on Valero Street and a few steps from the pleasant Ayala Triangle, one of the neighborhood’s most beloved leisure spaces. You can also comfortably walk to the Greenbelt mall and, of course, you have plenty of restaurants around you.
We stayed in the simplest room, but even that is 25 square meters (super spacious) and has a small kitchen perfect for making breakfast. If you need more space, there are apartments even with a separate bedroom. Whichever you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy the shared pool and, worth noting, the beds are extremely comfortable. We think it’s an ideal place to sleep in Manila for a night—or even if you have quite a few more days.

More alternative hotel options in Manila
We’ve focused on the above, but of course there are many more that may suit you within that 40–60€ price range. Here are a few more options:
- Privato Makati: in the north of Makati but easily reachable by taxi, it has spacious rooms from 40€, though they sometimes run cheaper. You can book from this link.
- UNWND Boutique Hotel: comfy beds, a great breakfast included, modern décor, and even a spa. Comfort and a slightly more premium touch for under 60€ per night for two people. Take a look here.
Best hotels with a pool in Manila
You probably already know that the weather in the Philippines is always hot, so having a pool to relax in after a day exploring the city or doing some last‑minute shopping is always appreciated. That’s why we decided to create a section for places with a pool in Manila.
City Garden Grand Hotel
Imagine ending your day in the Philippine capital with a dip in the pool located on the 23rd floor while you take in the city’s skyline. That’s the biggest draw of the City Garden Grand Hotel, which is one of our favorites and where we love to go when we want to stretch the budget a bit.
From 68€ per night for a double, you get huge rooms (seriously, around 28 square meters) without a dazzling décor, but pleasant and comfortable. It’s a “proper hotel”, with good service and the option to include a buffet breakfast. If you choose the higher‑tier rooms, besides being nicer, you’ll also enjoy the views.

I’M Hotel
Our second recommendation for hotels with a pool in Manila is the ultra‑modern skyscraper occupied by I’M Hotel, located in the trendy Poblacion neighborhood, right across from the City Garden Grand Hotel. Besides having a very cool infinity pool, the rooms are very cozy, spacious (from 30 square meters), with great views, and the bed is excellent.
They also have a rooftop terrace with a bar that offers the best views of Manila. Room prices start at 83€ per night for the “Classic Studio” and, if you want to treat yourself, you can also book the spa.

© I’M Hotel
Discovery Primea
This is the best hotel in Manila with a pool and also one of the best in the city. It’s in Makati, opposite the Glorietta and Greenbelt shopping centers, and this 5‑star hotel is an excellent option for staying in Manila if you want to spend a day shopping, enjoy the pool, and go out to dinner at a nearby restaurant. In that sense, we can’t help but recommend People’s Palace in Greenbelt, where they serve a fabulous pomelo salad.
The rooms are very spacious and very cozy, and most of them have spectacular views. Prices are around 150€ for a double room. Expect service in line with the hotel’s level, which, for us, is one of the best hotels in Manila by a long shot.

Other places to stay in Manila with a pool
Here are a few more recommendations:
- Coro Hotel: also located in Poblacion, this Manila hotel likely has the prettiest rooms without having to spend a fortune. They’re around 50€ per night and are very well equipped. Of course, it also has a pool. Book now here.
- 1898 Hotel Colonia En Las FIlipinas: as Spanish speakers, it’s a hotel that doesn’t go unnoticed. It also offers the perfect balance between “nostalgia”—thanks to photos of that Manila one could call colonial—and modernity reflected in its furniture and bed (by the way, very comfy). Prices around 50€ per night. It has a pool! Book now at this link.
- City Garden Hotel Makati: it’s the “little” brother of the City Garden Grand Hotel. It’s true that its rooms are a bit more sober or darker, but it’s still a good hotel where comfort and cleanliness come first. It has a pool—not as fascinating as the other one, but it does the job. Prices around 50€ per night. Take a look here.
Best hotels to stay near Manila airport
If, in the end, what you’re looking for when staying in Manila is for your accommodation to be close to the airport, here we’ll give you a few options. Even so, given that the airport has 4 terminals and some are quite far from each other (which is a horror if you add Manila traffic), it’s very important to pay close attention to the location.
Also, unfortunately, there are barely any hotels offering a free airport shuttle, so choosing a good location is crucial. On the other hand, although not unsafe, the airport area isn’t particularly pretty (we’d say the opposite) and it doesn’t have a great dining scene. Our advice is to aim well and choose a pleasant hotel that lets you rest.
Although we give you some options here, you can read more in Where to stay near Manila airport.
Savoy Hotel Manila
Since a good portion of travelers arriving in or departing from Manila do so via the airport’s Terminal 3, when people ask us for a good hotel near it, we always say the same thing: Savoy Hotel Manila. It’s right in front of the terminal building and accessible via a walkway, so you can walk there in about 5–10 minutes, saving yourself fights with scammy taxi drivers and wait times.
Not only that, its location is perfect, since you have several restaurants and cafés nearby (including a couple of McDonald’s and a Starbucks), massage centers, and a 7‑ELEVEN, which will be great for buying a SIM card for your phone without paying for tourist SIMs (we talk about this in Internet in the Philippines).
The hotel is a “proper hotel,” meaning a large lobby, a huge café for the buffet breakfasts (very complete, by the way), and several room types ranging from the simplest to the suite. We’ve always stayed in the double, which you can choose with 2 beds or one double, and we can’t complain about anything—quite the opposite. Plus, although you might think it would be noisy being next to the airport, we’ve always slept wonderfully. Prices are around 50-60€ for a double, which we find quite reasonable.
Not only that, the hotel has a pool, gym, sauna, and spa. They offer room service and there’s a bar. For us, it’s the perfect Manila hotel for a layover when you don’t want to complicate things.

Backpackers Homestay – NomadsMNL
Don’t expect large rooms by any means, but if you’re passing through Manila and want to sleep near the airport in a clean, affordable place with air conditioning, fast Wi‑Fi, and friendly staff, this is a good alternative. It’s near T1, though you’ll need to take a car or GRAB, and double rooms start at just 23€.

Achievers Airport Hotel
If you think you’ll arrive tired from a flight and need to sleep near Manila airport with good comforts, Achievers Airport Hotel is a good option. It’s not “amazing” in the sense that it’s basic, the air conditioning is noisy, and it’s dated, but with double rooms from 31€ per night and the option to add breakfast for little money, we think the value for money is quite good.
It’s located right in front of Terminal 4 (you can walk there) and it’s one of the few hotels (if not the only one) that offers a free transfer (you choose whether inbound or outbound). They also have a restaurant open 24 hours a day, in case you don’t feel like moving.

Other hotel options in Manila around the airport
If you browse booking platforms you’ll see the scene around the airport is a bit bleak and hotel reviews in this area are terrible. Since we’ve tried a lot, here are other recommendations that may come in handy:
- Telly’s Studio across NAIA3: as the name suggests, it’s an apartment located opposite Terminal 3. There are loads of condominiums in this area and many are rented by the day. This is one with the best value for money and, in addition, you can use the pool. As with the Savoy, you can walk there by crossing the bridge that connects it to T3—it’s safe. Take a look here.
- NomadsMNL Hostel: owned by the same folks as the homestay above and quite close by, but more modern and geared more toward backpackers, with an 8‑bed shared dorm with curtains for 13€ per night. Close to T1 and T2, but better to take a taxi. Book from this link.
- Skyport Hotel: not the best hotel in Manila, but it’s close to T1 and T2 and offers an airport shuttle. Prices around 60€ with breakfast included. You can check availability here.
