Manila is the gateway to most trips around the Philippines, and the city can feel overwhelming if you need to pass through it at some point. Is Manila dangerous? What is the best area to stay in Manila? Should I stay near the airport? What are the best hotels in Manila? These are some of the most common questions we receive and, having lived in the capital for several years and explored it extensively, we’re here to answer them based on your travel plans and needs.

Is Manila dangerous?

The short answer is no: Manila is not dangerous. Manila is a chaotic city and it may look a little run-down when you first arrive; however, it is by no means an unsafe city.

Like any major city, Manila has some rough neighborhoods (for example, Tondo, which has a reputation for being unsafe) and you will need to use common sense and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas, but after living in the city and returning many times (as it is usually the starting and ending point of our trips), we have never had any problems and do not consider the city unsafe.

In any case, we recommend reading our guide to Scams in the Philippines so you know what to expect and can arrive better prepared.

Which area should you stay in Manila?

Manila is a huge city and you may be unsure which area to stay in. In general, we believe that the best area to stay in Manila is Makati, a very safe district that is easy to get around and has plenty of restaurants, excellent hotels, shops, and bars where you can get a taste of Manila’s nightlife and enjoy a cold San Miguel. Makati itself has several distinct areas, and our favorites are Poblacion and the area around Greenbelt Mall. However, every traveler is different, so we’re going to walk you through the pros and cons so you can decide which area of Manila suits you best.

You’ll find everything you need to know about getting to these areas safely and avoiding scams in our guide to getting from Manila Airport to the city center.

If you want to keep things simple, here are the hotels in Manila where we usually stay:

  • Lub-d Makati: it has both dorms and comfortable private rooms, including double and family rooms. It is located in Poblacion, our favorite area of Makati. It’s close to the pier where you can catch the local ferry to Intramuros.
  • City Garden Grand Hotel: if you want a hotel with a pool in Manila and a rooftop with views, this is your best option. It also has an excellent location, with plenty of restaurants nearby.
  • Discovery Primea: a top-tier option near Greenbelt, which, in our experience, is Manila’s most pleasant mall, with attractive green spaces and plenty of great places to eat. It is also well connected to the airport.

As you can see, all of them are in Makati, which is the area we like best and the one we think you’ll find most pleasant.

a) Staying near Manila Airport

If you arrive late, have an early flight the next day, or simply want to rest without venturing far, staying near the airport can be a good option. The area is safe and relatively quiet, and you’ll always find somewhere to grab a bite.

Some of the best hotels in Manila are near the airport, but bear in mind that the airport has four terminals. So you’ll need to choose your accommodation based on which terminal your flight arrives at or departs from. Many accommodations near Manila Airport offer a complimentary transfer to your chosen terminal. Terminal 3 is also connected by a footbridge to an area with several hotels, including our favorite: THIS.

Either way, click the button below to see plenty of accommodation options in Manila, sorted by price and proximity to your preferred terminal:

b) Staying in Makati, Manila

Makati is Manila’s financial district, with several shopping malls, nightlife areas, clubs and high-end restaurants, while still retaining plenty of local character. This is the part of the city where we lived and the area where we most recommend staying, especially if you have a day or two to explore the best of Manila.

Makati is a convenient base for visiting Intramuros, and the airport is about 20 minutes away without traffic, making it a convenient base for spending a morning or afternoon exploring the historic district before returning to do some shopping, get a massage, have dinner and drinks in one of the livelier areas while taking in the city skyline. Plus, there is a huge range of guesthouses, hostels and excellent affordable hotels, as well as hotels with pools and views where you can take a sunset dip.

Poblacion is Makati’s trendiest neighborhood. Here you’ll find loads of lively restaurants and bars and you can comfortably walk around when heading out for dinner or drinks after a flight or a day exploring, so we’re going to recommend several of the best places to stay in this part of Manila. Another good option is the part of Makati around the Greenbelt and Glorietta malls.

Of all these options, we usually stay at THIS and, if it’s full, at THIS.

Sleeping in Makati

From left to right: Greenbelt Mall – Makati Church – Ayala Avenue

c) Staying in Malate, Manila

Malate is a good area to stay in Manila if you’re looking for a more local atmosphere, with plenty of bars and street food. It’s also a popular area among backpackers looking for somewhere to stay in Manila. We like to wander around there and have a drink, but we think Makati is a more comfortable and welcoming district if it’s your first visit to the city. Even so, there are options such as Stay Malate (with double and shared rooms with or without air-conditioning) that are decent enough, although they’re nothing to write home about.

d) Staying in Intramuros, Manila

Intramuros is the most interesting part of Manila to visit if you want to appreciate the city’s historical significance. However, because of its limited dining and entertainment options and the fact that it is not usually particularly pleasant to walk around after sunset (though it isn’t dangerous), it’s not the area we recommend staying in.

Even so, if you’re very interested in staying in Intramuros, take a look at The Bayleaf Intramuros, the best hotel in this part of Manila, which has a great rooftop terrace with panoramic views.

Views from the terrace of the Bayleaf Hotel in Intramuros

e) Other areas to stay in Manila

Of course, there are plenty of other areas to stay in Manila, which is actually a vast metropolitan area made up of several distinct cities.

So, if you’re considering visiting northern Luzon and going to places like Banaue or Sagada, you may be better off staying near one of the main bus terminals, particularly around Cubao. Since traffic can be extremely heavy and getting here from the airport can take more than an hour, our advice is to stay close to the Araneta Coliseum, which is in a pleasant area close to the bus terminals. For example, we recommend THIS or THIS.

Although it isn’t one of our favorite areas, another interesting area to stay in is Fort Bonifacio or BGC. This district near Makati is so modern that it feels a little like a slice of New York or Miami in the Philippines. Bonifacio High Street is a broad avenue lined with shops and restaurants that give the area a distinctly American feel, so it’s a safe, clean and pleasant area for shopping or dining outdoors. That’s why some of the best hotels in Manila are in BGC, such as THIS or, if you’re looking for something more affordable, THIS.

Finally, if you’re traveling for business, given Manila’s notoriously bad traffic, it’s best to stay close to where your meetings will be held and double-check the exact location, since there are also offices in other parts of the city such as Mandaluyong, Ortigas or Alabang.

Best hostels to stay in Manila for backpackers

If you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with friends and want to meet other travelers, you have plenty of backpacker-style places to stay in Manila. Makati has the widest selection of this type of accommodation, as it also has the city’s liveliest restaurant and bar scene. Below, we’ll share some options we’ve tried ourselves.

You’ll find plenty more options in our Hostels in Manila guide, but here is a small selection to get you started:

Z Hostel

Located in Poblacion, Makati’s trendiest neighborhood, this is a great place if you’re looking for a backpacker vibe in Manila, as parties are often held on the rooftop. They also have a guest-relations team that leads neighborhood walking tours and organizes other activities. They also have a reasonably priced restaurant serving tasty food, if you’d rather stay in.

The rooms are modern, clean and comfortable and come equipped with lockers that you can secure with your own padlock for extra security. They have mixed dorms for 4, 6 and 8 guests and female-only 6-bed dorms. They also have double rooms with private bathrooms. Prices start at €14 and include a decent continental breakfast.

Lub d Philippines Makati

If you’re a backpacker looking for a fantastic place to stay in Manila, stop searching—Lub-D is your spot. This is one of the best hostels we’ve encountered on our travels. Located in the same area as Z Hostel, Poblacion, you’ll find dorms for up to 6 guests, including a female-only option, with bunks fully equipped with outlets and lights, as well as lockers. They also have double and quadruple rooms with private bathrooms, making it an excellent option if you prefer more privacy. A bed in a dorm costs around €14, although you can sometimes find special deals.

It’s very clean, the staff are great and the common areas are ideal both for socializing and for getting some work done on your laptop. In addition, it has a lovely rooftop restaurant where you can have a drink or dinner and meet other travelers. There’s a fast, affordable laundry service right opposite the hotel, the Hulo ferry stop for boats to Intramuros is nearby, and several malls are just a short walk away.

It’s one of our favorite places to stay in Manila, which is why we dedicated this article exclusively to it: Staying at Lub d Makati.

If you’re thinking of taking a backpacking trip to the Philippines, you’ll be glad to know that this is part of our selection of the Best hostels in the Philippines. And, as a bonus, if you stay for at least one night, they’ll store your backpack free of charge for up to two months, which is ideal if you want to travel light around the islands.

Cheese Hostel Manila

If you’re looking for cheap accommodation in Manila with a backpacker vibe, one of the best budget choices available at the moment is Cheese Hostel Manila. It’s within walking distance of Makati’s most interesting areas, has beds from just €7, a very pleasant bar and restaurant area, and a rooftop with impressive views over Manila’s dense skyline.

You can choose from a female-only 4-bed dorm and mixed 7- or 10-bed dorms, but they also have double rooms. All have air conditioning. Bear in mind that the dorms are fairly old-school, without curtains, if that matters to you. Other than that, it’s very clean and the staff are super friendly.

Other similar, interesting places to stay in Manila

The options above are excellent, but here are a few more in case none of them appeals to you or they’re fully booked:

  • Mad Monkey Manila: also in Poblacion, with dorm beds from €11 and a lively social vibe, including a pub crawl. You can book through this link.
  • Lime Lite Manila Hostel: not the most central, but it’s cheap and clean. Take a look here.
  • The City Flats Amorsolo: well located in Makati, next to Makati Medical Center and with plenty of restaurants nearby. They have women-only or mixed 4- or 6-bed shared rooms from €13 per bed. You can check availability at this link.

Best budget hotels in Manila

It’s true that accommodation prices in Manila have gone up over the years and that if you want something reasonably decent you may need to stretch your budget a little, but you can still find good hotel options in the €25–€40 range (for a double room). To make things easier, we’re going to recommend the best ones based on our own stays at many of them.

Leez Inn Makati

Located in our favorite part of Makati, Poblacion, this is a functional, clean, and modern hotel. Surprisingly, room prices start at just €17 and the rooms have all the essentials: air conditioning, a private bathroom (a bit small but manageable), a TV, and a kettle. It’s perfect if you’re traveling as a couple (there are only double rooms) and aren’t looking for much beyond a good location, since it’s surrounded by restaurants and bars.

Hop Inn Hotel Makati Avenue

Another cheap hotel in Manila that we love is Hop Inn Hotel Makati Avenue. This hotel is part of the Hop Inn chain, which follows a similar concept to Ibis, with rooms with fairly minimal furnishings but relatively spacious, clean, and well air-conditioned.

In this case, the hotel is located right on Makati Ave, one of Makati’s main thoroughfares, in its Poblacion area. Specifically, it’s across from Lub d, which we mentioned earlier, so there’s a laundry next door and you’re close to the Pasig River and the Hulo boat stop, which takes you to Intramuros—making it a very convenient option.

From just €29 per night you’ll get a double room (you can request twin beds or one double bed) with a private bathroom, air conditioning, and very good service.

Lub d Philippines Makati

Although we already mentioned it in the backpacker-friendly Manila hotels section, we don’t want you to overlook it if you’re traveling as a couple or with family because it’s one of our favorite hotels in the city—and you might even run into us here if we happen to be in Manila at the same time. Besides shared dorms, they have double and quadruple rooms that are spacious, pleasant (Filipino crafts give them a nice touch), and have a reliable internet connection. Double rooms start at €25.

Despite being a hostel, don’t expect a wild party atmosphere. The property has eight floors and is super quiet, so you don’t need to worry on that front. There’s a café and a restaurant if you’d rather keep things simple.

Hotel Durban

When prices elsewhere are sky-high and we’re looking for an affordable place to stay in Manila, we always take a look at Hotel Durban, which is also right in the heart of Poblacion and offers a comfortable, no-frills stay.

It’s true that the standard single and double rooms are quite small and don’t have exterior windows, but both have a private bathroom and air conditioning and prices start at just €20, which is a real bargain for the location. Plus, in some cases the cost includes a pretty decent breakfast. If you need more space or want to be more comfortable because you’ll be staying for more than one night or expect to spend a lot of time in the room, the suites and triple rooms are better options.

Other highlights include the tastefully decorated common areas and the service at the front desk. The restaurant is the one thing we wouldn’t particularly recommend, but it’s not a problem because there are plenty nearby.

U Hotels Makati

Located just behind Lub d—so it’s also a great area to stay—we’ve stayed at U Hotels Makati a couple of times and can recommend it. The ceilings are a little low for our taste, but the rooms are modern, they have a cool vibe thanks to the graffiti, the air conditioning works wonderfully, and there’s a pleasant café near the reception area.

Prices start at €31 for the smallest double rooms and, if you’re traveling with family or friends, they also have triple rooms.

Red Planet Amorsolo Makati

Located very close to Ayala Avenue, one of Makati’s main thoroughfares, this is one of the best Manila hotel options in terms of value for money. Along with Lub d, it’s one of the hotels we stay at most often because it’s cheap, it’s close to where we used to live (which brings back good memories), and although the rooms aren’t very big, we find it comfortable and welcoming.

It is part of the Asian hotel chain Red Planet and has modern, clean rooms equipped with all the essentials. The airport is usually quicker to reach from here than from Poblacion and you can walk to the Greenbelt malls (where there are loads of great restaurants) or follow our tips on where to eat in Manila. It’s a very safe and quiet area. Rooms start at €31.

More budget hotels in Manila

Here are a few more budget places to stay in Manila that we recommend:

  • Redenza Suites: the location isn’t ideal, but it isn’t far from Poblacion and affordable taxis make it easy to get around. They’re small studio units with a kitchenette from just €21. Book here.
  • Gomez House: in Poblacion, on the way to the large Power Plant Mall, it’s a simple but clean place with double rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom from €16 per night. Have a look at this link.
  • Solace Hotel: not right in the “core”, but well located for central Makati. Modern rooms from €24. You can book here.

Mid-range hotels in Manila

If you can stretch your budget a little, you’ll find some higher-quality hotels in Manila. That’s why we decided to create a category of places in the €40–€60 range, which we consider mid-range for accommodation in Manila.

Herald Suites Polaris

This Manila hotel is located on Polaris Street—hence the name—in the Poblacion neighborhood and a short walk from Power Plant Mall, one of our favorite shopping centers. Of all those we’ve mentioned, it’s perhaps the most stylish and characterful of the bunch thanks both to its décor and to the excellent service. Although the photos may make the hotel look rather dated, it doesn’t feel dated in person and it’s one of the most comfortable hotels in the area.

The rooms—even the most basic—are spacious (the smallest is 27 square meters) and have a private bathroom, air conditioning, TV, and a kettle. Better still, rates for a double room start at just €40 per night and include breakfast, which we think offers excellent value for money.

Herald Suites Polaris

The Sphere Serviced Residences Managed by HII

We often find it fully booked, but if you’re lucky enough to find availability, we suggest considering this aparthotel for your stay in Manila because it’s excellent. It’s located right in the heart of Makati, on Valero Street and a few steps from the pleasant Ayala Triangle, one of the neighborhood’s most popular green spaces. You can also comfortably walk to the Greenbelt mall and, of course, you have plenty of restaurants nearby.

We stayed in the most basic room, but even the entry-level room is 25 square meters (extremely spacious) and has a small kitchen perfect for making breakfast. If you need more space, there are even apartments with a separate bedroom. Whichever you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy the communal pool and it’s worth noting that the beds are extremely comfortable. We think it’s an ideal place to stay in Manila for a night—or even for a much longer stay.

More alternative hotel options in Manila

We’ve focused on the options above, but of course there are many more that may suit you within that €40–€60 price range. Here are a few more options:

  • Privato Makati: in northern Makati and easy to reach by taxi, it has spacious rooms from €40, though rates are sometimes even lower. You can book through this link.
  • UNWND Boutique Hotel: comfortable beds and an excellent breakfast included in the rate, modern décor, and even a spa. Comfort and a slightly more premium touch for under €60 per night for two people. Take a look here.

Best hotels with a pool in Manila

You probably already know that the weather in the Philippines is hot year-round, so having a pool where you can unwind after exploring the city or doing some last-minute shopping is a real bonus. That’s why we decided to create a section for places with a pool in Manila.

City Garden Grand Hotel

Imagine ending your day in the Philippine capital with a dip in the pool located on the 23rd floor while you take in the city’s skyline. That’s the biggest draw of the City Garden Grand Hotel, which is one of our favorites and where we love to stay when we feel like spending a little more.

Double rooms start at €68 per night and are huge (seriously, around 28 square meters), with understated décor that are nonetheless very comfortable. It is a full-service hotel, with good service and the option to add a buffet breakfast. If you choose the higher-tier rooms, you’ll get more stylish interiors as well as better views.

I’M Hotel

Our second recommendation for hotels with a pool in Manila is the ultra-modern skyscraper that houses I’M Hotel, located in the trendy Poblacion neighborhood, right across from the City Garden Grand Hotel. As well as a very cool infinity pool, the rooms are cozy and spacious, starting at 30 square meters, with great views and exceptionally comfortable beds.

The hotel also has a rooftop terrace with a bar that offers the best views of Manila. Room prices start at €83 per night for the “Classic Studio” and, if you want to treat yourself, you can also book a spa treatment.

Discovery Primea

This is our favorite hotel with a pool in Manila and one of the best hotels in the city overall. It’s in Makati, opposite the Glorietta and Greenbelt shopping centers, and this 5-star hotel is an excellent option for staying in Manila if you want to spend the day shopping, relax by the pool, and head out for dinner at a nearby restaurant. While you’re there, we highly recommend People’s Palace in Greenbelt, where they serve a fabulous pomelo salad.

The rooms are exceptionally spacious and comfortable, and most of them have spectacular views. Prices are around €150 for a double room. Expect service that matches the hotel’s five-star standards, making it, in our opinion, one of the best hotels in Manila by far.

Other places to stay in Manila with a pool

Here are a few more recommendations:

  • Coro Hotel: also in Poblacion, this Manila hotel has some of the prettiest rooms without having to spend a fortune. They’re around €50 per night and are very well equipped. It also has a pool, of course. Book now here.
  • 1898 Hotel Colonia En Las FIlipinas: as Spanish speakers, this hotel immediately caught our attention. It also offers the perfect balance between nostalgia—thanks to photos of Manila during the colonial era—and modern touches reflected in its furnishings and décor (by the way, very comfy). Rates are around €50 per night. It has a pool! Book now at this link.
  • City Garden Hotel Makati: it’s the smaller sister property of the City Garden Grand Hotel. It’s true that its rooms are slightly more understated and darker, but it’s still a good hotel where comfort and cleanliness come first. It has a pool—not as impressive as the one at its sister property, but perfectly adequate for a refreshing dip. Rates are around €50 per night. Take a look here.

Best hotels to stay near Manila airport

If your main priority is staying close to Manila Airport, here we’ll give you a few options. Even so, given that the airport has 4 terminals and some are quite far apart, which can be a real headache once Manila traffic is factored in, it’s very important to pay close attention to the location.

Also, unfortunately, very few hotels offer a free airport shuttle, so choosing a good location is crucial. On the other hand, although it isn’t unsafe, the airport area is far from attractive and it doesn’t have a great dining scene. Our advice is to choose carefully and pick a comfortable hotel where you can get a good night’s rest.

Although we’ve included several options here, you can read more in Where to stay near Manila airport.

Savoy Hotel Manila

Since many travelers flying into or out of Manila use Terminal 3, whenever readers ask us to recommend a good hotel nearby, our answer is always the same: Savoy Hotel Manila. It’s directly opposite the terminal building and accessible via a walkway, so you can walk there in about 5–10 minutes, avoiding the hassle of dealing with dishonest taxi drivers and unnecessary waiting.

Its location is another major advantage, as there are several restaurants and cafés nearby (including a couple of McDonald’s and a Starbucks), massage parlors, and a 7-ELEVEN, which is a convenient place to buy a SIM card for your phone without paying inflated tourist prices for a SIM card (we talk about this in Internet in the Philippines).

This is a full-service hotel, with a large lobby and a spacious dining area where an excellent buffet breakfast is served, and several room types ranging from standard rooms to suites. We’ve always stayed in a double room, available with either twin beds or one double bed, and we’ve always been very happy with our stay. Plus, although you might expect it to be noisy so close to the airport, we’ve always slept wonderfully. Double rooms cost around €50–€60, which we find quite reasonable.

The hotel also has a pool, gym, sauna, and spa. It also offers room service and has a bar. For us, it’s the perfect Manila hotel for a layover if you’d rather keep things simple.

Backpackers Homestay – NomadsMNL

Don’t expect particularly spacious rooms, but if you’re passing through Manila and need somewhere to stay near the airport in a clean, affordable place with air conditioning, fast Wi-Fi, and friendly staff, this is a good alternative. It’s near T1, though you’ll need to take a taxi or book a Grab, and double rooms start at just €23.

Achievers Airport Hotel

If you expect to arrive tired after your flight and need a reasonably comfortable place to stay near Manila airport, Achievers Airport Hotel is a good option. It’s nothing special—the rooms are fairly basic and dated, and the air conditioning can be noisy—but with doubles from €31 per night and breakfast available for a small extra charge, it offers good value for money.

It’s located directly opposite Terminal 4 (you can walk there) and it’s one of the few hotels—possibly the only one—to offer one complimentary airport transfer, either pickup or drop-off. It also has a restaurant open 24 hours a day, if you don’t feel like going out.

Other hotel options in Manila around the airport

When you browse booking platforms, you’ll notice that the hotel options around the airport are rather limited and many hotel reviews in this area are poor. Having tried quite a few of them ourselves, here are other recommendations that may come in handy:

  • Telly’s Studio across NAIA3: as the name suggests, it’s an apartment located opposite Terminal 3. There are plenty of condominium buildings in this area, with many units available for short stays. This is one of the best-value options, and guests also have access to the pool. As with the Savoy, you can walk there safely via the footbridge connected to Terminal 3. Take a look here.
  • NomadsMNL Hostel: run by the same people as the homestay above and quite close by, but it is more modern and geared towards backpackers, with an 8-bed shared dorm with curtains for €13 per night. It’s close to T1 and T2, although taking a taxi is still advisable. Book through this link.
  • Skyport Hotel: it isn’t one of Manila’s best hotels, but it’s close to T1 and T2 and offers an airport shuttle. Rates are around €60, including breakfast. You can check availability here.
