Staying overnight in Dumaguete? Whether you’re en route to another destination or you’ve read our article Things to do in Dumaguete and we’ve convinced you to give it a chance, spending a night in the capital of Negros Oriental is not a bad idea, especially if you’re wondering where to stay in Dumaguete.

The range of places to sleep in Dumaguete is quite large and you can always take the chance to enjoy a bit of city life, treat yourself to a nice dinner, stroll along the pleasant Rizal Boulevard or even go to the movies. So you don’t lose your mind looking for where to do it, here we’ve selected the best places to stay in Dumaguete ordered by price. We’ve also included a special section for those traveling as backpackers in the Philippines.

Best areas to stay in Dumaguete

Where is it best to sleep in Dumaguete? If you take a look at the map we’ve left below, you’ll see that most of the accommodation in the city is located in the northern part. That is, above what could be considered the “center,” where the bell tower and Rizal Boulevard are.

Considering that Dumaguete isn’t very big and you’ll be able to get everywhere on foot or, if you’re feeling lazy, by tricycle for 10–15 pesos, we wouldn’t worry too much. Even so, we’ve left you a couple of recommendations if you want to stay right in the thick of it.

On the other hand, if what you’re looking for to sleep in Dumaguete is a place by the sea and/or with a pool, you’ll need to head south. Dauin, 15 kilometers away, is an excellent alternative, since it won’t take more than 30–40 minutes to get there. Although it doesn’t have one of the best beaches in the Philippines—especially if black‑sand beaches don’t really convince you—it’s a good place to relax and, very importantly, to go diving or snorkeling. Everyone organizes daily excursions to Apo Island to swim with turtles, if that fits your plans.

At the end of this article about hotels in Dumaguete and nearby we recommend a few resorts in Dauin and Malatapay (a little further south, where the port to Apo Island is located). You’ll also find a map where you can easily locate them.

Hostels for backpackers in Dumaguete

If you’re traveling solo and want to meet people, or you’re going as a couple or with friends and like the backpacker vibe, don’t worry—you’ll find backpacker hostels to sleep in Dumaguete. The ones we’re going to recommend below have very cool common areas for grabbing a drink at night.

Casa Arrieta Hostel

Located near the port and halfway to the airport on lively Hibbard Avenue (full of restaurants), this is one of the most recommendable places to sleep in Dumaguete and also one of the most curious. The reason? The hostel is set in a house built a few years after World War II and still preserves part of the furniture from that time, making your stay something special.

Don’t be scared—although it’s more than 70 years old, the house is totally remodeled and has every comfort so you can sleep in Dumaguete without missing a thing. All rooms have air conditioning and a fan; the bathrooms have hot water, there’s strong wifi, and you can use a small kitchen where there’s always drinking water.

You can choose between mixed or female‑only dorms for 4 people, a 6‑bed dorm, or double rooms. In the case of shared rooms, each traveler has their own reading light, outlets, and locker. All have shared bathrooms, which are as spotless as the rest of this Dumaguete hostel. If you add to that that the staff are extremely nice and helpful, it’s a sure bet!

Antwet Backpackers and Rooftop Bar

If we love the previous one, we like this one even a tad more—above all for its location (close to the center) and its rooftop bar, with a pool table and spectacular views of Mt. Talinis (Cuerno Negro) and Mt. Kanlaon, two of the volcanoes of the Philippines. Although it can’t be labeled a party hostel, if you’re looking for a livelier backpacker atmosphere, you’ll find it here. Its owner, Tweety, is the soul of the place and will make your stay much easier.

Antwet Backpackers is one of the most modern places to sleep in Dumaguete. While the rooms aren’t very spacious, the beds are comfortable. You can choose between the 10‑bed dorm with a fan or the one with air conditioning. In both you have your own locker to padlock.

The Flying Fish Hostel

Located farther north than the previous ones, but on a city thoroughfare where it won’t be hard to find tricycles, this is the Dumaguete hostel with the most spectacular design. With an industrial style, its common areas are very pleasant and—most importantly—it has a bar and restaurant where they serve wonderful breakfasts and dinners, in case you don’t feel like going out at night. On Fridays and Saturdays you can enjoy live music.

Plus, you can choose between more privacy or sharing, since at The Flying Fish you have shared dorms with 6, 8, and 10 beds, but also double rooms (standard, superior, and deluxe) with a private bathroom. All are very spacious and have air conditioning In the case of the dorms, each bed has its outlet, light, and a locker with a padlock.

Golden Gate Suites

If what you want is not to worry about finding transportation, or you need to do the Philippines visa extension and want to be first when the immigration office opens, then book Golden Gate Suites now. You’ll also be able to walk calmly to the port if you’re en route to Siquijor. In short, for location it beats all the above.

It’s not the hotel with the most spacious rooms, but they all have air conditioning, a TV, and a fairly modern bathroom where hot water isn’t lacking. The suite has a small kitchen to prepare something basic, but, in reality, you’re surrounded by restaurants and, as a curiosity, there’s a 7‑ELEVEN right at the hotel’s door. Resorts in Dumaguete and nearby

Sure, Dumaguete isn’t bad and there are bits and restaurants to keep you busy, but you’re still surrounded by asphalt. If that stresses you out and what you want is to feel the island life you miss, it’s also easy. Being a small city, in 25–30 minutes heading south you’ll have the beach and palm‑tree calm you need.

The southeastern coast of Negros is a haven of peace and also has the appeal of reefs teeming with life. Dauin and Malatapay don’t have white‑sand beaches, but they’re pleasant places to spend a few days diving or snorkeling and, if you’re up for it, visiting Apo Island. Here we recommend a few resorts near Dumaguete that might suit you:

Allura Resort Dive & Spa

Located in Zamboanguita, right next to the small jetty from which the bangkas to Apo Island depart, this is one of the best resorts if you want to stay near Dumaguete. The value for money is very good, as you get recently built bungalows and rooms with sea views, an infinity-style pool, a restaurant, and a dive center all together just 30 minutes’ drive from the center without spending a fortune.

Mike’s Dauin Beach Resort

This is the resort we chose for our first stay in Dauin and to dive. We can’t say a bad word about it because it has everything: spacious rooms with loads of light where you’ll find air conditioning, a kettle, hot water, and a TV; beautiful garden areas; a pool right by the beach (which you can see in the header photo of this article); a very romantic restaurant; and, very importantly, a well‑equipped dive center.

In case you didn’t know, Dauin is one of the best places for diving in the Philippines and it’s just 20–25 minutes from downtown Dumaguete. You’ll also find reefs very close to shore if you haven’t yet done your Open Water Diver course.

You’ll find more alternatives for where to stay here in our article Things to do in Dauin.
