Years ago, each insurance company simply had a couple of different policies: the cheap one and the one with huge coverage. But of course, there was a gap in between that left many travelers without the tailored insurance they were looking for. IATI Mochilero was the answer to that need and quickly became the favorite insurance of thousands of travelers and the best‑selling online.
Next we’ll look in detail at the reasons, but, broadly speaking, they are these:
- Huge medical coverage: With up to 600.000 euros for medical assistance (more than half a million euros!) you’re ensured to be covered no matter what. And we say this having faced bills of up to 25.000 euros after a 3‑week hospital admission.
- Adventure Sports included: Heads up. Don’t make the mistake of thinking adventure sports are things only a few people do, because this also includes activities such as snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking, etc. Without this coverage you’re totally lost in many countries. - Cancellation option: You can add the Complemento de Anulación which covers you up to 3.500 euros if you have to cancel your trip for one of the covered reasons. Positive COVID included! Being able to recover what you invested if you can’t travel is something that gives many travelers peace of mind.
- Purchasable while traveling: Not all insurance offers this possibility. But IATI Mochilero can be purchased even when you’re already traveling. Whether you didn’t have insurance and decide to get it now, or your previous policy ends and you want to keep traveling with peace of mind.
- Baggage and documentation: Besides covering your health, it covers your belongings. It includes coverage up to 1.500 euros for theft or issues with your baggage.
- Delays: It not only covers your health and baggage; it protects you in cases of delay and other transport issues. You’ll have up to 300 euros for cases such as delay in the delivery of checked baggage, departure delay of the means of transport, or, among others, cancellation of the departure due to strike.
- COVID coverage: IATI was the first insurance company to cover COVID cases as well, and it does so with significant limits that we show below. For us, it has already saved us a lot of money on PCR and antigen tests in several countries.
- Accidents: With the Bodily Injury in a Motor Vehicle coverage you’re also assured assistance if you suffer an accident on a motorbike, car, bus, etc.
- Support via WhatsApp: You can contact them free and fast. You can also do it by email, which we personally find more convenient.
- No higher prices for non‑Spanish citizens: Many companies charge travelers from LATAM more, but this doesn’t happen with IATI Mochilero and the discount makes it even cheaper.
- You get 24/7 assistance in your language.
- In case of assistance you don’t need to pay upfront. Plus, IATI Mochilero has no deductibles and they take care of everything.
IATI Mochilero price – Discount
IATI Mochilero’s price and the discount are understandably important when deciding. Well, good news! This super policy has the best value for money on the market.
It’s a small part of your travel budget and, with the 5% IATI Mochilero discount, it’s even less. Here’s an example in this table. Buying IATI Mochilero with a discount is super simple if you follow these steps we show below. Keep in mind that if you don’t do it this way—or if you buy directly on the IATI website without coming through here—you’ll pay more because the backpacker discount won’t be activated.

2) In the menu, fill in the following fields:
- Trip origin
- Trip destination
- Dates
- Type of insurance: select “Travel insurance”

3) You’ll see the different travel insurance options, such as IATI Estrella (unlimited medical coverage but without such large Adventure Sports limits) or IATI Estándar (500.000 euros for medical assistance). 4) Important moment! Here you can add two TOP add‑ons:
- The Complemento de Anulación de viaje: As we mentioned, with it you can recover up to 3.500 euros if you have to cancel your trip for one of the many covered reasons. We always add it.
- Air Help: Helps you claim up to 600€ for canceled or delayed flights. We haven’t used this one yet, but it’s very interesting during those summer periods when so many flights are canceled.

IATI Mochilero reviews – When we do NOT recommend it
After seeing IATI Mochilero’s main features and its price, you’ll likely understand why it’s the best‑selling travel insurance. We’ve been using it for many years and have had to rely on it maaaany times:
- Dengue
- COVID
- Motorbike accident
- Respiratory problems
- 3‑week hospital admission + 2 surgeries.

For us, it’s the best policy in most cases. The coverages it offers are huge and more than enough for any destination, the price is among the best on the market, the assistance they provide is top‑notch and, in addition, the Adventure Sports coverage has become necessary on many trips: trekking in Nepal, snorkeling in the Philippines, hot‑air ballooning in Cappadocia, kayaking in New Zealand, etc. Without it, you’re not covered in case of an accident. It’s a must.

Long‑stay insurance

Insurance for short trips or getaways
IATI Mochilero is a superb policy that fits most trips but for a short getaway you don’t need such high limits. If you plan to go away for a weekend to Paris, spend a few days in Rome or switch off in Portugal, the policy that may suit you better is this one: IATI Estándar.

Maximum coverage insurance
If you want to feel you’re traveling with the highest possible limits, IATI Estrella may be what you’re looking for.
It offers UNLIMITED medical assistance, ensuring there’s absolutely nothing that isn’t covered (1 million euros in Europe). Even so, IATI Mochilero’s 600.000 euros with the discount are also more than enough for 99.99% of cases.

Great medical assistance coverage
This policy currently features massive medical coverage up to 600.000 euros. It guarantees you’ll be treated by the best specialists in the country you travel to and in the best hospitals.
This half a million euros also covers COVID‑19 cases. This means that, if the virus crosses your path, assistance, PCR/antigen tests, and even extending your trip if you must undergo a mandatory quarantine are included.
No upfront payments, everything included
Many insurers make you pay for assistance yourself and then start a heavy process to get reimbursed. IATI Mochilero makes things much easier. If you need any kind of assistance, you just contact them and they’ll quickly direct you to the best hospital for your case. Once you arrive, they take care of the cost of the visit, tests, and even medications.
Plus, they don’t use deductibles. Deductibles—common with many insurers—make you pay part of the assistance yourself (around 80‑100 euros). If you have to go to the doctor several times, those expenses add up. IATI Mochilero doesn’t use a deductible and takes care of everything from the very first cent.
Free assistance, 24 hours and in your own language
While it’s 21:00 in New York, it’s 3 a.m. in Spain. When you’re traveling anything can happen at any time, and you don’t want that to be a problem. With IATI Mochilero they will assist you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, without exception.

Adventure Sports included + Rescue
IATI Mochilero has the highest Adventure Sports limits on the market. It covers from 40 meters deep while diving up to 5.400 meters of altitude while trekking.
Remember: Adventure Sports doesn’t mean jumping off a cliff. These are the activities so common on many trips such as snorkeling, hiking, hot‑air ballooning, kayaking… We can’t imagine traveling to most countries without this coverage.
In addition, it also includes an extra up to 15.000 euros exclusively for Rescue. If you need to be rescued (helicopter included) while practicing these activities, you’ll have a large cushion for search and rescue.
Beyond health
It’s our favorite policy because it goes far beyond health issues. Thanks to it, you’ll also have coverage in cases such as:
- Baggage theft and damage: up to 1.500 euros
- Departure delay of the means of transport: up to 270 euros
- Missed connections: up to 90 euros
- Forced trip extension: up to 500 euros
- Accident benefit for disability or death: up to 6.000€
- Repatriation: included
Bodily injury in a motor vehicle
This is a question many of you ask us. “If I have a motorbike accident in countries like Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia… am I covered?” And the answer is “Yes”. But you’re not only covered on a motorbike, and not only if you’re the one driving.
Thanks to the bodily injury in motor vehicles coverage, included in IATI Mochilero + Discount, you’ll also be covered if you travel as a passenger or if something happens to you in cars, vans, or buses.
