IATI Seguros? Reviews? We had exactly the same doubts before taking out travel insurance for the first time. But, “thanks” to the number of times we’ve had to use their services, we’ve been able to experience first-hand what each of them is like and our IATI Seguros reviews are 100% well‑founded.
We’ve been traveling intensively for many years, and continuously since 2014, so we’ve had plenty of time to try this insurance and competitors’ ones, as well as chat with people who have used Intermundial, Mondo, Mapfre, Chapka or others. And, combining all that information, we still end up choosing and recommending IATI Seguros. That said, nobody is perfect and, for that reason, in this article, Jairo (who is the one who has needed it most often) will tell you good and bad experiences with them and our opinion of IATI in general.
IATI Seguros negative reviews
Let’s start with what, besides the 5% discount on travel insurance, you came to look for: IATI Seguros, negative reviews. We must say, however, that the balance is totally positive, and that’s why we keep saying it seems to us the best travel insurance.
The famous collect call
When we talk about “IATI Seguros positive reviews” I’ll mention the collect call again as something positive, since it’s an excellent extra; the problem is that I still don’t know how it’s used. One of the things IATI promotes is the possibility of calling them from abroad at no cost, but after years with them, I still haven’t seen an explanation of how to do that. I could probably figure it out on Google, but I think it would be great if, when you receive the policy, they explained in two lines how to call them for free from any country.
In any case, if you pay for the call and then show the invoice, they reimburse that expense.
UPDATE 2025: Through the new IATI app you can call them completely free if you have an internet connection.
Identifying yourself is, sometimes, a bit slow
There’s probably a legal reason for this but, on many of the occasions I’ve called to request assistance, giving my name and ID hasn’t been enough; they always insist that I give the policy number. I don’t know the exact reason, but sometimes you don’t have that data at hand and it’s a bit of a pain to have to look for it in certain situations.
It’s not 100% customizable
Although we think it’s the best travel insurance for everything it offers, sometimes it feels like you have so many coverages that maybe some aren’t necessary. I think that if there were an option to customize every detail of the coverage it could end up being cheaper. For example, IATI Mochilero has some great coverages, among which diving up to 40 meters and trekking up to 5,400 stand out. In my case I use the diving part, but I’d like to be able to remove the trekking one since I don’t usually use it.

IATI Seguros positive reviews
One of the main reasons why we recommend IATI Seguros as the best travel insurance is because the negatives seem few and easily improved and the positives are many and powerful. For example:
Purchasing is super easy
You simply access it through this link. Select your destination and dates, and you’ll see the types of policies available. Choose yours, make the payment and you’re done. I’m not saying anything, but if the competition has plagiarized this process, it’s for a reason.
MEGA-Coverage
In 2018 they doubled, without affecting the price, the coverage of their policies and in 2025 they reinforced them again. They now even have a policy with unlimited medical coverage: IATI Estrella. Watch out they don’t come to rescue you in a helicopter with a jacuzzi!
24-hour assistance in your language
Further down I’ll go into detail and tell you about my experience with IATI, but yes, besides being available 24 hours a day, they have translators. Many of the most famous companies (World Nomads, for example) don’t have this service. I speak English perfectly, but while in the Philippines in March 2018 I felt so bad that I didn’t want to make the effort. Solution? We made a three-way call with a simultaneous interpreter.
App and WhatsApp
Nowadays almost everything runs over the internet and through apps. They’ve recently redesigned their app and it’s now super intuitive to manage your policy and request assistance. It also lets you call them for free and upload your documents in case of expense reimbursement. It’s also possible to contact via WhatsApp.
EDITED 2025: They’ve just updated the app and it now has the best medical chat and many more new features!

Quality – Price
Yes, there are travel insurances cheaper than this one—of course! But if you read the small print… I doubt they’ll convince you. In IATI’s purchase process you’ll see all the details of what you’re buying. In those other cheaper companies’ process: you won’t. If you have a major accident on your trip, saving €5 on your insurance can mean paying a real fortune out of pocket.
You don’t pay a single euro upfront
If you have any medical need and call them, they’ll send you to a trusted medical center. There you won’t have to pay anything, neither the visit, nor the tests nor the medicines. They’ve even paid me a round‑trip flight to go to a hospital!
If you have an emergency and go to the doctor before calling them you’ll pay out of pocket, but by later submitting the invoices they’ll reimburse you.
Beyond health: flights, baggage, accidents…
Many people think that travel insurance is only for cases in which you get sick. With this one, you’ll also be covered for lost baggage, missed flights and even motor‑vehicle accidents. If something happens to you, for example, in a tuk‑tuk in Thailand, IATI is one of the few that will look after you.
Collect call and now free calls
Although I still don’t know how it’s done (as we already discussed in “IATI Seguros negative reviews”), it’s great to be able to contact them free of charge.
Since 2024 you can call them for free through their app.
IATI Seguros reviews on Tripadvisor
While we’re at it… I’ll tell you a “secret”. In the travel/internet world we almost all know each other and you end up finding out about everything. For this reason, I’d just like to warn you about what you may find out there.
For example, when looking for IATI Seguros reviews on Tripadvisor it’s easy to find both good and bad ones. Which is normal because no company is 100% infallible. What happens on that site in particular is that many of the criticisms are made from accounts that are, straight up, from competitors. Dirty play? Yes. But I suppose it’s normal given IATI’s popularity.
It also happens, for example, on Facebook. If in some group you come across criticism from someone called Ana López… it’s a fake Intermundial account, the competition. And I could tell you several more like this from other companies.
IATI Seguros: 100% real experiences
As I said at the beginning, unfortunately, I’ve used IATI’s travel‑insurance services many times. To the point that in 2018 I may have set some usage record. The following are some of my experiences with IATI Seguros.
Tokyo, May 2018: Goodbye lower back
Horrible, I really wouldn’t wish it on anyone. While in Tokyo with friends I got a pinched nerve in my lower back that kept me from moving. Every step was enormous pain. Getting from the Shibuya metro to the accommodation was torture. There I quickly called IATI’s 24‑hour phone to ask for help. They took me by taxi to an ultra‑modern clinic, the doctor saw me, they took an X‑ray and I was attended by a physical therapist who worked magic on my back. The bill exceeded 500 euros and I didn’t pay absolutely anything.
Kyoto, May 2018: Japanese hospital
I had been dealing with a respiratory problem since the Philippines and was directed to one of the best hospitals in Kyoto, right in the center. To get there they paid for the taxi (which in Japan aren’t exactly cheap). The doctor didn’t speak a word of English and they immediately provided, via iPad, a simultaneous interpreter. Obviously, I didn’t pay for the visit or the medicines they prescribed.
Surigao, April 2018: Respiratory problems
I spent 5 days of hospital visits due to respiratory problems. On this occasion it wasn’t a hospital with an agreement with IATI, so I had to pay and they would reimburse me. Normally this is done by postal mail, but they went out of their way in my case and, while I was in Cebu, they came to my hotel to pay me in cash.
Romblon, March 2018: flights paid
We were in the Romblon islands, where the hospital left much to be desired. I went on my own because I had chest pain and was told I could have a serious pneumonia. I quickly called IATI and we agreed they would move me to one of the best hospitals in the Philippines, in Manila. They paid me round‑trip plane tickets! I immediately bought the flights myself (it’s something they do, but there was only one seat left and I didn’t want to wait) and they reimbursed me quickly.
In this case I felt so bad that I didn’t want to speak in English. They put a simultaneous interpreter on our calls to speed everything up.
Chiang Mai, July 2017: An ultrasound
While in Thailand my left chest started to hurt. I called and half an hour later I was already in the hospital office. They gave me an ultrasound and everything was great. The problem came when leaving the hospital. Due to an email failure they hadn’t received IATI’s payment guarantee and the security guards wouldn’t let me go. I got very angry, called them again and in the end they fixed everything.
Malaysia, November 2017: Driver and private interpreter
I had just suffered a urinary infection in Thailand and it looked like I could have a relapse. They referred me to a very good hospital where at that time there was no one who spoke English. To solve it, a driver in a private van came to pick me up and acted as an interpreter between the doctor and me.
And so, I could tell you many more of my experiences with IATI Seguros, but I think with this you can already get an idea of the quality they offer.
