Accommodation is an important part of any journey around the Philippines, but—believe us—where to stay in Batad is one of the key factors in enjoying this trip through the mountains of Luzon.

People come to Batad to gaze at that natural amphitheater of rice terraces that are over 2,000 years old. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Philippines and it’s hard to get tired of looking at it. For this reason, our advice is to choose your hotel in Batad carefully —make sure it comes with epic views. Truly, there’s nothing like ending the day with a cold San Miguel beer while contemplating the terraces or opening the window the next morning to such a breathtaking panorama.

So, here’s our selection of the best places to stay in Batad.

Things to consider when choosing where to stay in Batad

We’ve already given you the biggest clue: the place you choose to stay in Batad should come with great views.

To be honest, it’s hard to find accommodation in Batad that doesn’t have them, but not all are the same. To understand this, it’s best to take a look at a map (there’s one at the end of this article).

The path from the parking area (where jeepneys and tricycles drop you off) goes downhill, and Batad itself consists of 2 neighborhoods or hamlets. The first you reach is a cluster of higher houses (in the green part of the map), and the second is that small concentration of houses and huts at the end of the so‑called Batad Trail and where the Tappiya Falls Trail begins (in the orange part).

Well, as you’d expect, the best views are from the higher area and, luckily, there are several hotels in Batad located up here.

On the other hand, although we can’t say it’s freezing, nights in Batad are cool. We’re in the mountains, so you’ll be glad you packed a sweatshirt. After walking the terraces, climbing up and down the steps, and working up a sweat, you’ll surely want a shower. So another thing to consider when choosing where to stay in Batad is that they have hot water so you can enjoy a hot shower and not step out feeling chilled.

Don’t worry—these places to stay in Batad that we’re going to talk about meet both conditions to varying degrees. Even so, keep in mind that accommodations in the village are quite basic and you can’t expect major comforts. We think that’s part of their charm, too.

That said, in all of them you can pretty much forget about Wi-Fi and almost any mobile signal! It’s also common for towels not to be included in the price. If you haven’t brought your own, you’ll have to rent one. And as a heads‑up, bring warm clothes or ask for extra blankets. Honestly, in Batad, temperatures drop significantly at night and a thin blanket isn’t enough for many.

The best places to stay in Batad

Simon’s Inn and Restaurant

This was the first hotel where we stayed in Batad. Like the others, don’t expect big luxury, but the views are EPIC. It’s located in the highest part of Batad, so, along with Rita’s Mountain View Inn (which we talk about below), it has the best views. In fact, they have a fantastic terrace where they serve tasty food and cold beers.

The downside to the building at Simon’s Inn is that the walls are wooden, so you hear everything. Even so, you’ll probably be truly exhausted after so much up and down, so you’ll crash. The beds are reasonably comfortable and, most importantly, the bathrooms have hot water.

Batad Cristina’s Main Village INN & Restaurant

Although it’s not in the upper part of Batad, Cristina’s Inn’s views have their charm, since it is literally at rice‑terrace level. You may also feel you’re more immersed in village life and get a closer look at local customs. On the other hand, they have a restaurant run by the family itself (very nice and welcoming) and it’s excellent. Although the pitas are delicious, don’t forget to try the rice!

Otherwise, the hotel in Batad is great. The rooms are small and have no luxuries. In fact, there’s no electricity, and you have to charge your devices in the restaurant area. They also have hot water in the bathrooms.

Note that it’s located lower than the previous one, so you’ll need to walk down (and carry your backpack) for 20–30 minutes more.

Batad Transient House

This hotel in Batad is very similar to the previous ones. From the terrace you get nice views, but it’s basic. Although cleanliness sometimes leaves something to be desired, there are a couple of bathrooms with hot water.

We’ve included it in the list of places to stay in Batad because it offers the chance to sleep in an authentic Ifugao house, like the one you can see in the photo on the right. Just keep in mind that sometimes it isn’t offered because it’s under maintenance. In addition, they also offer (for a fee) cultural nights where you can watch traditional Ifugao dances.

Lhorens Inn and Restaurant

Owned by a lovely family, Lhorens is also a great place to stay in Batad. They have a nice terrace (perhaps without as good views as the previous one), where they serve home‑style meals at a good price and where you can charge your devices because there are no outlets in the rooms.

The rooms, although small, are fine and the beds have mosquito nets. If you can, ask for room 4, which has the best views. The bathrooms are a bit rudimentary, but they have hot water.

Rita’s Mount View Inn and Restaurant

To be honest, if we weren’t staying at Simon’s Inn, we’d stay here—right next door. The views from the terrace are wonderful and they have 2 rooms that look directly out over the rice terraces. To get those, it’s best to book in advance.

Although you shouldn’t expect much glamour, the rooms are very clean and the beds have mosquito nets. The shared bathrooms have hot water.

And to keep things simple, they also have a restaurant serving tasty food.
